SPAN Caversham - Social Group for Older Independent People
Who goes to SPAN Caversham?
We are a friendly group of around forty older independent people. A good number of local people attend while others live further away.
How often do l need to attend?
While most people come along weekly there are others who attend on a more casual basis. It's up to you!
What happens?
Usually we start off with a casual cuppa at 10.30 am and then settle back to enjoy what has been organised, and then around mid-day we wind up.
How do l get there?
Most people either walk or drive, others use taxis and public transport which operates frequently in the area.
Who organises things?
Our co-ordinator Wikitoria has great ideas and together with your suggestions she plans a monthly timetable which can include bus trips, a community outing, visiting entertainers and speakers. As well there are weekly raffles and a monthly sales table (all optional). Then throughout the year we enjoy one or two special outings like our midwinter and Christmas lunches. To keep you informed of what's on, Wiki advertises weekly in the community notice board section of the Star newspaper.
Where do you meet?
We meet in the warm, sunny lounge room of the Presbyterian Church at Thorn Street, Caversham.
How much does it cost?
There is no joining or membership fee. When we use the lounge, members pay $3.00. Expenses for other outings and events are paid by members. Wiki tries to keep these costs as low as possible so everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Can I just turn up on a Tuesday?
Yes, you can just turn up but we do like to know if someone new is coming along, to make sure they are welcomed. Starting a new group can be a bit daunting for some people and if this is the case for you Wiki will happily discuss with you how you would like to be introduced.
